For centuries music has been a fundamental component in the composition of worship in the church being a common means of praising and worshiping God. It goes way back to the Old Testament where after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, they were amazed by God’s miraculous ways and Miriam lead the team in praising Him. (Exodus 15) The young David was also a good instrumentalist whom could play the harp to King Saul and the evil spirit could leave, just to highlight a few.
1 Samuel 16:23 “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.”
Even though the Bible has not clearly stipulated to Christians on how music should be used in the church, several churches have made different citations and interpretation of different incidents where God was worshipped through music in the Bible to either justify or prove of why and what method they use in structuring their musical moments and especially on the use of instruments. (2nd Samuel 6:5 1stChronicles 15:16)
We must all agree that the music in church has endured a major evolution from time to time from composition and messaging of the music to presentation, the spiritual and physical appearance, maybe attributed to different factors.
In the modern church, music is has been a key factor in increasing the population of the congregation as it identifies well with the young generation.
In most churches, you will find the population of the youth outweighs that of adults and you wonder what the magic is because as it stands, the generation z is less interested in matters of “the son of man”.
This has worked so well and not once you’ll here a pastor say, “let the music bring the masses and will preach to them”. Well, I am well resonating with such statements, but am having problem with how the church creating a “secular” environment to identify with sinners to get themselves to God.
The modern church has created a secular environment to woo a lot of young people, whom because of the excitement, the freedom in dress code, the dance and the content of the music, they join these churches, however not to bring souls to Christ, but as an avenue to freely without scrutiny from parents, to meet and “socialize in Christ”. Unfortunately the results from socialization is greatly determined after nine months and in government data reports in teenage Sexually Transmitted Infections. (STI)
An incident that occurred in my village in Kenya, the church which has modified music and branded it “Sakata”, a popular dance, had organized for a much hyped convention which swept a good teenage population from my village that were dancing “sakata”. Shockingly after a few weeks of the convention, 5 young girls aged 12-14 were pregnant.
This does not only affect the youthful population but our elderly generation in the church who are also getting confused. Some opting that change is a constant aspect in life and they should appreciate it. They go ahead to blend and dilute worship which is eroding the discipline in the church, where some are holding to originality of the teachings saying that God’s word is immune to change.
It’s ironic that the church is hiding behind “sinner friendly” music to fish more souls to the kingdom of God. The devil is also hiding behind it to completely colonize the church of God.
As a strong believer in the Government’s constitution and as a literate in the making of my country’s laws, I believe it’s impossible to bend the laws for an imaginary greater good. Like wise, the church must not look forward to a “friendly” fight with the devil, it must face it with “absolute truth” and originality based on the foundation of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit and with guidance from the Bible.
“What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.” 1 Corinthians 14:15
