Did you know that your freedoms are being silently stripped away?
The controversial 15-Minute City plans are being implemented in Canada. Edmonton council has decided to proceed with the plans despite the public backlash.
What are 15-Minute Cities?
It is a ‘Green’ initiative aimed at limiting the use of motorized vehicles to decrease pollution. On the surface, the proposal does not sound bad. Everything you need—shops, schools, pharmacies, doctors, hospitals—should be within a 15-minute walk from your house.
That doesn’t sound bad, right?
Well, there is another aspect to these plans. The unspoken part of the 15-Minute Cities is that with ‘everything you need just a short walk away’, your freedom to move around in your vehicle will be infringed.
Take the example of the 15-Minute Cities in England. If you want to drive through certain residential parts of the capital city, London, you need a special permit from the local council or risk facing a hefty fine.
Parts of the city are restricted for residents of those streets only. If you want someone to visit you, you have a certain number of visitor passes per year; after that, you have to apply for permission from the local council. Why should a bureaucrat at the local council decide who can drive on what street and when?
They want to control how we move, restrict our car use, and limit our freedom. This unjust policy must be scrapped. It’s about our freedom at risk here! Our fundamental rights are under threat.
