Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran and the principal architect of four decades of terror against the United States as well as Jews around the world, was killed early Saturday morning in a joint Israeli-American military operation after his compound in Tehran was bombed. His top military advisers were also killed in the initial stages of the ongoing operation. For 36 years, Khamenei served as the supreme authority over a regime whose hostility toward America, Israel, and the Jewish people saw thousands murdered through the network of terror proxy forces he led across the region. His death Saturday, alongside senior military command, removes from the world the single figure most responsible for organized violence against the Jewish people over the past half-century.It is surely providential that the military operation was launched on the Shabbat that Jewish people read the Torah’s commandment to remember Amalek, the Jewish people’s principal foe during their early years as a people, which is read on the Shabbat preceding the holiday of Purim.Purim, which begins Monday evening, March 2, and continues through Tuesday, March 3, recalls the miraculous redemption 2,300 years ago of the Jewish people in ancient Persia. The megillah—the Scroll of Esther—read on the holiday tells the story of the villain Haman, who convinced King Achashverosh of Persia to allow the genocide of the Jewish people. Through G‑d’s miracles, the Jewish people, led by the righteous Mordechai and Queen Esther, rose up and defeated Haman’s plot, and the villain and his advisors were hanged.Iran is, of course, the geographic heir to ancient Persia, and the ideology of the Ayatollah’s regime echoes that of Haman. In an address after the conclusion of Shabbat, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew the parallel directly.“In two days, we will celebrate the holiday of Purim. Twenty-five hundred years ago, in ancient Persia, a tyrant rose against us with the very same goal — to utterly destroy our people,” he said. “…Today as well, on [the eve of] Purim, the lot has fallen, and the end of this evil regime will also come.”Operation Roaring LionIsrael’s operation — codenamed “Roaring Lion” — deployed hundreds of aircraft against hundreds of targets across Iran, and was supported by American missiles and drones. Along with Khamenei, IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour, Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh, Supreme Leader adviser Ali Shamkhani, and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri were killed in Tehran. On Saturday night, Israel confirmed that approximately 40 senior Iranian leaders targeted in the initial wave were dead. Strikes also hit Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, military sites, and the Central Bank of Iran.Iran’s retaliation came quickly. For the first time since the 12 Day War between Israel and Iran in 2025, Israelis spent Shabbat in and out of their bomb shelters, as the IRGC launched hundreds of ballistic missiles in the hours following the strikes, targeting cities across Israel as well as American military bases throughout the Middle East. One person was killed in Tel Aviv, and 20 more were injured when a missile struck a residential building directly. The missiles also impacted Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. Israel’s air defense systems, operating alongside American assets deployed in the region, intercepted the majority of the incoming fire.During past conflicts in the Land of Israel, and during times of danger for the Jewish people, the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, made practical suggestions of mitzvahs that would elicit G‑d’s blessings and protection:For Jewish men and boys aged 13 and over to wrap Tefillin. For Jewish women and girls to light Shabbat candles before sundown on Friday. To get a mezuzah for each doorway of the home.To increase charity and acts of kindness. To increase in Torah study (See Chabad.org’s Daily Study page)To pray for the safety of all residents of the Holy Land (Psalms 20, 22, 69 and 150 are traditionally said in times of distress).Purchase a letter in a Torah scroll
