Psalm 1

Scripture Reading:

    Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
        nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

    He is like a tree
        planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
(Ps. 1:1–3)

A Prayer of Thanksgiving:

Father, we thank you for the book, we thank you for the glorious man, the God whom the book reveals as our Savior. Blessed be the sovereign grace of God that has chosen unto him a people who delight in his word and who meditate in it both day and night!

Charles Spurgeon (1834–1992)

Hymn:

That man is blest who, fearing God, from sin restrains his feet,
Who will not stand with wicked men, who shuns the scorners seat
Yea, blest is he who makes God’s law his portion and delight,
And meditates up on that law with gladness day and night

“That Man Is Blest” Words by New Metrical Version of the Psalms, 1909

Meditation:

How blessed am I to know that one so mighty both in love and power watches over and directs my steps — one who is not only God, but “the God of my salvation” (Micah 7:7)! He has a more tender and personal interest in me than in the angels of heaven, for I am that marvel of marvels, a sinner saved by grace, a soul redeemed unto God by his most precious blood!

Susannah Spurgeon (1832–1903)
